The air’s filled with that cozy mix of coffee and essential oils, and honestly, I’m buzzing with anticipation. It’s wild to think that it’s only been about five or six months since I took the plunge in August to really dive into this beauty world.

Inspired by Salons as a Girl

When I was a kid, I used to hang out at the local salons with my mom. I was that little girl who was fascinated by how stylists transformed her look. The sounds—the snipping of scissors, the chatter—felt almost musical to me.

That’s when I started dreaming.

Not just to watch, but to be the one creating those transformations.

How I Chose My Beauty School

Choosing where to study wasn’t just about picking a name from a list.

Growing up in a family of eleven, with nine sisters and a younger brother, life was anything but boring. My mom wasn’t really into the whole beauty thing, so I naturally became the go-to hairstylist for my sisters.

We’d have these pretend spa days where I�d be in charge of the comb and brush, creating hairstyles and having a blast. It was during these moments that my love for beauty started to bloom, even though I didn’t fully realize it at the time.

From Nursing to Beauty

Despite my passion for beauty, I initially aimed for a career in the medical field.

It seemed like the responsible choice, right?

So, I ended up working at a nursing home, helping the elderly residents. Interestingly, the nursing home had a small salon where the ladies would get their perms done.

One day, while chatting with the stylist, my old love for beauty resurfaced. She suggested I check out 91ɬ�� in Twin Falls, a top-notch cosmetology school affiliated with .

Deep down, I knew that my true passion was making people feel beautiful. The world of cosmetology called to me, and I decided to dive in headfirst.

The process took from 9 am to 6 pm, and I must have asked my instructors a million questions. In the end, the result was great, but I was a nervous wreck. Now, whenever I get a similar request, I still get a bit anxious, but I�ve learned to handle it better.

Hi! I’m Savanna, a graduate of 91ɬ�� Twin Falls, a beauty school affiliated with . I’m gonna give you the inside scoop on my switch to the beauty industry that’s been nothing short of a rollercoaster, in the best way possible.

As a single mom, bouncing between odd jobs and looking for something more, my son’s Little League games became my reality check�I needed more than just a gig, I needed a career that let me be there for him, front and center.

Weighing a career in dental hygiene or the beauty industry

So there I was, weighing my options. Dental hygiene seemed like the safe bet with a steady paycheck and all that adult stuff. But beauty? That was where my heart was doing cartwheels.

I tried the dental thing, but those hours�starting before the sun was up and ending when it was too late�meant my kiddo was stuck at daycare for way too long. Not cool.

Then came that one morning outside his daycare that just hit me hard: My little guy, with his face pressed against the glass, bawling his eyes out ’cause he didn’t want to let go. That’s when I knew, nope, this isn’t it.

Listening to my gut and taking the jump

That morning was the push I needed. I messaged 91ɬ�� Twin Falls� admissions director Kerin and jumped ship to the world of hairstyling. Turned out, making folks feel amazing with a fresh cut or color was my jam, and the whole team at the school made me feel like I was at home.

Life as a beauty school student was a whirlwind�up at the crack of dawn, racing to drop my son off before diving headfirst into a day full of classes and practice. I won’t lie, it was intense, but it was also kind of amazing to see myself grow in ways I never thought I would, like getting comfy talking in front of people and really getting the hang of things like hair chemistry�yeah, it’s a thing!

It okay to make mistakes at this 91ɬ��!

It not all perfect. This one time I struggled big time with a hair coloring job. I was a mess and literally cried right there in the school.

That’s when I learned that messing up was just part of the deal.

My instructor, Nicole, she was a rockstar. She had me practicing on a mannequin head until I could foil hair with my eyes closed. And would you believe it? Now I love doing those blond transformations.

My career in beauty is off to a great start

Fast forward a bit, and I’m now doing what I love at the , waiting to go all in. My goal is to slay at hair extensions and keep that sweet spot between working hard and momming harder. Because, at the end of the day, those soccer games and school plays aren’t gonna watch themselves, right?

The first step to becoming a nail tech is to enroll in a program! Most states require nail techs to complete a certain number of hours of training before they can obtain a license. Our curriculum is designed to educate our students, and they can expect to learn:

Meet The Educational Requirements

Idaho has two different types of barbers: barbers and barber-stylists. The difference between a barber and a barber-stylist is that barber-stylists are able to perform additional services that a barber can�t. This can be services like hair coloring, bleaching and other common cosmetology techniques.

To become a barber, you must complete a 900-hour barber training program. To become a barber-stylist, you need to complete at least 1,800 hours of training.

About Our Barbering Program

At 91ɬ�� Idaho, our barbering programis 900 hours and takes most students less than a year to finish. Our program is designed with our students in mind and was created to help students become licensed barbers. Our curriculum covers the techniques of cutting hair, the knowledge needed for the exams, and it also covers business topics. In this program, you can expect to learn:

• Styling
• Foundational cuts
• Tapered cuts
• Fades
• Shaving
• Beard design
• Skin care
• Men’s grooming
• State rules and regulations
• And more!

Pass The Exams

The exams consist of two parts: the National NIC Barber 1 Written Exam and the National NIC Barber 1 Practical Exam. Students must pass both exams with at least a 75%.

This test is offered in a multiple-choice format and involves 60 questions, of which 50 are weighted and contribute to the final score. Candidates will have 90 minutes to complete the exam. It is divided into these sections:

• Scientific concepts (40%)
• Implements and equipment (10%)
• Hair care services (30%)
• Facial hair and skin care services (20%)

Candidates must bring one mannequin head for this exam and a table clamp. The duration of this exam is approximately 3 hours and consists of the following sections:
